Our Evening High Performance Driver Education event (HPDE) has been a recent addition to the club’s calendar. In the 25 years of the BMW Club history, this is only the 3rd year we have had an evening HPDE event. We time our event to land on, or within a few days of the summer solstice. The longest day of the year provides ample daylight well into the evening. This event offers some great photography opportunities with the extended golden hour and an amazing driving experience for a reduced cost. It also benefits those that may find it difficult to take a full day off work.
As a hot summer day gives way to cooling temperatures, the cars stay a little cooler but introduces a new challenge for drivers. Changing track conditions means the grip may not be the same as previous sessions, as our instructions from Driving Unlimited remind us. As golden hour sets in and you wait for your next session, it’s hard not to admire the view of Mount Baker in the background of the track.
It is one thing to enjoy your car at a racetrack on a beautiful summer night, but what really makes these events so enjoyable are the great conversation from the amazing people our club events seem to attract. I don’t think car culture is fading anytime soon. If anything, it seems to be going the opposite way. We appear to be in one of those golden ages where there are so many choices of high performance cars from all manufacturers. The only way to truly enjoy what these cars have to offer is to get them on a track in a safe environment with professional instructors, that can teach you how to enjoy your car and still drive it home.
The BMW club has a long history with Driving Unlimited. A partnership going almost as far back as the clubs founding. They provide excellent instruction to our novice group who have never been on a racetrack as well as to those who have years of track experience but are looking to take that next step and improve their driving even further. We consistently get comments on how good the instruction is from the instructors. Not many events provide professional driving instructors with real motorsports experience. The instruction that Driving Unlimited provides at our events has helped countless drivers improve their driving on and off the track.
The Evening High Performance Driver Education event (HPDE) has proven to be a popular event. We would like to run more evening HPDEs in the year, but we find as we get into late August the difference in the light available in the last session can cast some long shadows across the track. There are only so many evening HPDE the club can run. If you are interested in attending more of these events, please let us know. Signing up early also gives us a good indication of enthusiasm around an event. The more enthusiasm, the more events we will try to plan for the following calendar year. If you have not experienced an evening HPDE I encourage you to sign up for one in the future. Even if you have not attended an HPDE previously, this is a great way to get on track without having to take a full day off work. It is also our cheapest HPDE of the year.
